André Schaeffner : Music and social structures (Societies of Tropical Africa).
In African societies, different instruments or orchestras are exclusively reserved for one sex, one special ritual, a religious or political leader, a circumciser or secret societies. A ritual essential to the existence of a society reproduces the society's structure as well as his history. Among the Kissi, apart from physical tests, the initiation appears to be a purely aesthetic apprenticeship ; music integrates each member and indicates his function in society.
