Marina Scriabine : Music and ancient China.
In ancient China, music and rites were closely linked. They corresponded to the philosophical principle of yang and yin. Music, the principle of harmony was played as an exercise in spiritual discipline. The twelve lyu, on which the musical system was based, also had a connection with the weights and measures system and with the divisions of the cosmos. The pentatonic scale reflected man's world; the choice of materials for the instruments had a profound significance and there were rituals governing the number of instruments, the way they were used and placed.
