Résumé anglais Georges Auclair : Necessary conditions to the existence of daily papers in the French departments: the case of La Rochelle. Within the framework of a survey on the relations between press and public, this article deals with) the case of La Rochelle, which has never published a daily paper for any length of time. The reason for the failure of all the attempts made between 1883 and 1939 to set up a daily paper are analyzed by means of documents and interviews (the latter bearing on the present situation). The author concludes with a suggestion as to the relations existing between press and public : the existence of a daily paper in the French departments depends on the relation between social cohesion and the size of the potential public.
