Jan Szczepanski : Changes in the class structure of Polish society.
On the basis of a description of Polish society before the 2nd World War, the present study utilises the class division characteristic of capitalist society. This division cannot be used to analyse a socialist society but helps here to follow better the transformations which came about : disappearance of certain classes (land-owners, bourgeoisie) ; improvement in the state of some others (workers, peasants) and the forming of new stratum. As for the class of landowners, the Revolution has served only to accelerate the process of disintegration linked to the development of capitalism and the peasant emancipation while on the contrary the bourgeoisie was not at all liquidated. The intelligenzia is the most transformed class (extention of education, training of technical specialists and economists). The basic judicial acts have favoured the constitution of a small bourgeoisie, which has its political representation and economical organizations. The different categories of peasants and workers are the beneficiaries of the Revolution. But this study is only a stage of the research and does not yet allow to draw definite conclusions.
