- Aux lecteurs de la Revue française de Sociologie - J. Stoetzel p. 3
- Le droit à la réflexion - Edgar Morin p. 4-12 Edgar Morin : The right to reflection. Sociological thinking could usefully be applied to the study of the society sociologists form. This society is presently attracted to two different poles : the traditional structure of academic society and the new structure of technical society : optimal conditions of scientific thought, that is for the stimulation of reflective thinking, of hypothetical thinking, and conceptual organization. The development of research, on a growing rational, and specialised technical basis, implies the maintaining of marginal research, observation on marginal events, and thoughts on fundamental problems. The principle of a twin development can be layed down : on the one hand, organised planified research, endowed with large means, on the other, marginal research and thoughts.
- Les changements dans la structure de classe de la société polonaise - Jan Szczepanski p. 13-23 Jan Szczepanski : Changes in the class structure of Polish society. On the basis of a description of Polish society before the 2nd World War, the present study utilises the class division characteristic of capitalist society. This division cannot be used to analyse a socialist society but helps here to follow better the transformations which came about : disappearance of certain classes (land-owners, bourgeoisie) ; improvement in the state of some others (workers, peasants) and the forming of new stratum. As for the class of landowners, the Revolution has served only to accelerate the process of disintegration linked to the development of capitalism and the peasant emancipation while on the contrary the bourgeoisie was not at all liquidated. The intelligenzia is the most transformed class (extention of education, training of technical specialists and economists). The basic judicial acts have favoured the constitution of a small bourgeoisie, which has its political representation and economical organizations. The different categories of peasants and workers are the beneficiaries of the Revolution. But this study is only a stage of the research and does not yet allow to draw definite conclusions.
Boudon : Methods of causal analysis. The methods of causal analysis actually employed in sociology such as Lazarsfeld's multivariate analysis or Simon-Blalock's analysis allow only the treatment of relatively simple causal structures, including a small number of variables and possessing certain formal characteristics. By no means do they allow to define a measure of causal dependence. Moreover, statistical techniques such as regression analysis can be considered as instruments of causal analysis only if particular structures are examined : they allow to define a measure of causal dependence only relative by to these structures. A stronger method than those in use can be formulated from natural hypotheses. It is called here : dependence analysis. It represents an extension of regression analysis and allows to define more general coefficients than those defined by the latter. Its logical basis can be understood only by reference to regression analysis and causal models studied by economists. From the results obtained a classification of the methods of causal analysis in relation to the formal characteristics of causal structures and to the hypotheses on which these methods are based can be established.
- Le non-conformisme sectaire en France. Problèmes de recherche - Jean Séguy p. 44-57 Jean Seguy : Sectarian non conformism in France. The author examines the state of research on non-conformism of protestant origin in France. He endeavors to seize the phenomenon statistically (about 100,000 sects existing at the present time) and to establish its geographical implantaient. He then explains the difficulties arising from a sociological interpretation based on meager materials of questionnable scientific value. The appearance in France, mainly after 1945, of a new form of non-conformist religious life and its relative success are facts to be retained until further inquiries can be made.
- Types de comportement religieux et cadres sociaux dans deux paroisses catholiques anglaises - Reine Goldstein p. 58-67 Reine Goldstein : Types of religious behaviour and social setting in two English catholic parishes. The author tries to establish, on the basis of the main optional religious acts (frequent communion, prayer in church during the week, appartenance to a church organization, and family evening prayer) a graduate scale of religious behaviour, following a typology defined by G. Le Bras, on the basis of compulsory religious obligations. She tries to find eventual matches between the « 24 types of behaviour » apparent through the synoptic analysis of questionnaires filled out by regular church goers and various social settings (occupation, ethnical background, familial status, mode of mariage, conversion). The study of the anomalies noted shows that communion plays the role of a sociological behavioral norm ; the « prayer in church on a week-day », characteristic of religious experience in Westfield, is the discriminating factor between different forms of religious experience corresponding to social groups differentiated mainly by a socio-professional variable.

Liakhoff, L. Minezeles, H. Minezeles, A. Wieviorka, R. Wieviorka, W. Ackermann p. 70-76 Studies concerning the judeity of Jews in France. Introduction by A. Memmi. Pre-inquiry by N. and S. Zoberman with the participation of L. and A. Ber, ?. and Cl. Liakhoff, L. and H. Minzelzs, and R. Wieviorka and W. Ackermann. The purpose of this pre-inquiry was essentially to test a questionnaire designed for an inquiry now being carried out on the judeity of Jews in France. The following provisional results were obtained after questionning 100 subjects whose answers were ranked according to Guttman's scale : 1) it seems possible to determine a judeity coefficient measuring the intensity of the relation between a Jewish person and all the possible situations of Jewish appartenance; 2) this coefficient appears to be independant of the subject's age, and to depend more on the socio-cultural level than on all other factors ; 3) religious and institutional appartenance is the most marking constituent of judeity; 4) more than 50% of the subjects perceive themselves as different from non-jews; 5) the subjects often confer on themselves stereotypes which non-jews apply to them.
