Résumé anglais Jean Remy : Persistance of the extended family in an industrial and urban environment. Hypothesis. The affective ties established between members of an extended family try to survive in urban and industrial environment by finding ways of expression adapted to the situation. While having lost its functions of structuration for global society, the extended family continues to play a privileged role in the satisfaction of social needs of an affective order. A research carried out in the Charleroi agglomeration allows us to verify this hypothesis on the following points: the part played by the proximity of an extended family in the satisfaction derived from the place of residence ; preponderant role of the family in the more intimate system of leisure. But these relations do not have any consequences on the authority of extended families over nuclear families.
