William S. F. Pickering : Gaston Richard : Collaborateur et adversaire.
En se centrant sur Gaston Richard (1860-1945) , cet article se propose d'éclairer le fonctionnement interne du groupe de l'"Année sociologique" et de montrer qu'il n'était pas si uni que certains l'imaginent. Gaston Richard qui remplaça Durkheim à Bordeaux comme professeur de science sociale, fut un des tout premiers collaborateurs de Durkheim et contribua de manière importante à l'"Année sociologique", en particulier par ses comptes rendus. Vers 1907 il quitta le groupe et plus tard, surtout après la mort de Durkheim, devint un de ses adversaires les plus résolus. Les raisons de son retrait du groupe furent, semble-t-il, presque exclusivement d'ordre intellectuel : il désapprouvait les ambitions de Durkheim pour la sociologie qu'il considérait comme excessives et s'attaquait tout particulièrement à son « sociologisme » en matière de liberté individuelle et de religion. William S. F. Pickering : Gaston Richard : collaborator and outspoken critic.
By focusing on Gaston Richard (1860-1945), this article is intended to shed light on the inner working of the "Année Sociologique" group, showing it was not as unified as some have imagined. Gaston Richard who became professor of social science in Bordeaux after Durkheim left, was an early collaborator with Durkheim, making considerable contributions to L'"Année sociologique", especially in reviewing. About 1907 he parted company with the group and later, particulary after the death of Durkheim, became an outspoken critic. The reasons for his withdrawal from the group were, it seems, almost entirely academic, disagreeing with what he saw as Durkheim's excessive claims for sociology, whose 'sociologism' was especially objectionable in the realm of the freedom of the individual and of religion.
