S'appuyant sur des données ethnographiques récoltées lors d'une recherche doctorale portant sur la maternité en milieu populaire urbain au Brésil, l'auteur identifie des aménagements symboliques particuliers autour des méthodes contraceptives, et notamment des inflexions identitaires chez les femmes désireuses de stérilisation par ligature des trompes. Contrairement à la vision négative véhiculée par les médias (nationaux et internationaux) et certains experts, cette technique contraceptive est largement valorisée par les femmes rencontrées. Face à l'incapacité des pouvoirs publics à établir un planning familial effectif et efficace, fondé sur d'autres techniques contraceptives dites « réversibles », et face aux contraintes sociales, économiques et des rapports de genre ressentis par les femmes, le « désir de ligature » s'avère non seulement une appropriation de la gestion de leur contraception mais aussi un socle sur lequel des aménagements identitaires se construisent. Relying upon data collected during doctoral research regarding maternity in an urban working-class environment in Brazil, the author identifies the particular symbolic adjustments linked to contraceptive methods and especially the modulation of identity among woman who want sterilization by tubal ligation. Contrary to the negative image presented by the media (national and international) and certain experts, this contraceptive technique is widely valued among the women encountered. Faced with the inability of public authorities to establish effective and efficient family planning based upon other “reversible ” contraceptive techniques and facing social and economic constraints as well as those of gender relations as felt by women, the “desire for ligation ” proves to be not only an appropriation of the management of their contraception but also a foundation upon which identity adjustments are constructed.
