L'expression de « croissant chiite » est récente. Elle a été prononcée pour la première fois par le roi Abdallah II de Jordanie, qui s'inquiétait de la formation d'un axe chiite avec pour centre l'Iran et s'étendant à travers l'ensemble du Moyen-Orient, jusqu'au Liban. La crainte n'est pas tant que le chiisme gagne de nouveaux adeptes mais qu'il soit instrumentalisé par l'État iranien pour établir son influence régionale, notamment en Irak. Pourtant, cette représentation répandue parmi les dirigeants arabes ne correspond pas à la réalité. L'Iran n'est pas parvenu à étendre durablement son contrôle sur l'autorité religieuse chiite et ne détient plus le monopole idéologique sur les militants politiques du chiisme. Deconstructing the « Shiite Crescent »The expression of a « Shiite crescent » is a recent one. It was used for the first time in an interview with the King Abdallah II of Jordan ; who expressed his concern about the development of a Shiite axis. This axis would have Iran as a main center, and would extend across much of the Middle-East to Lebanon. The main concern is not so much that Shiism is gaining new followers, but that it will be used by the Iranian state to establish a regional influence – and notably in Iraq. However, this theory that has spread among Arab leaders, does not exactly match the reality. Iran has not been successful in durably spreading its control over the Shiite religious authority, and does not hold the ideological monopol over political activists anymore.
