« L'Action française » fit l'objet d'une première condamnation non publiée en 1914, puis d'une seconde en 1926 dans des conditions qui ont soulevé passions et incompréhensions jusqu'à nous. Les raisons de cette sanction sont débattues : politiques ou religieuses ? Deux évidences ressortent : l'opposition de deux mentalités, un nationalisme intégral se réclamant du positivisme, un catholicisme intégral fondé sur une théologie du Christ, roi des nations ; un déplacement de la question quand l'Action française oppose au pape un non possumus. The first condemnation of « L'Action française » in 1914 remained unpublished but the passion and incomprehension which the second one raised in 1926 still persist today. Whether the reasons of the sanction were political or religious is a moot point. Two obvious facts emerge, though : the opposition of two mentalities, a radical nationalism founded on positivist claims versus a radical Catholicism founded on a theology of Christ as the Lord of Nations ; a shift of focus when the Action française put up a non possumus against the pope.
