À l'inverse de la première guerre du Golfe, il est remarquable de constater combien le refus de l'intervention militaire en Irak a traversé les familles politiques, associatives et syndicales au point de provoquer une sorte « d'unité nationale » derrière le président de la République. Mais, au-delà des apparences, certaines contradictions ont parcouru le mouvement d'opposition à la guerre en Irak. La première contradiction s'est nouée autour des complicités qu'ont entretenues une partie de la droite et de la gauche françaises avec le régime de Saddam Hussein. La deuxième contradiction trouve sa source dans le lien établi entre le conflit israélo-palestinien et la guerre en Irak. Surtout, c'est l'alternative entre une dimension purement antiaméricaine de l'opposition à la guerre et l'aspiration à un autre ordre mondial qui a divisé le mouvement d'opposition. Civil Society and the Definition of a New World Order
Contrary to the first Gulf War, it is striking to note how the opposition to a military intervention in Iraq embraced politics, associations and trade unions to such an extent that it created a sort of « national unity » behind the French president. Yet the movement against the war in Iraq was not devoid of contradictions. The first one lies in the close relationship that a part of the French right and left wings had established with Saddam Hussein's regime. The second contradiction comes from the link that has been established between the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the war in Iraq.
