Si la Mauritanie constitue « la porte occidentale » du monde arabe, pour les Mauritaniens, l'Irak en est la porte orientale. Aussi ne faut-il pas s'étonner que ces derniers, contrairement à leur gouvernement, se soient opposés activement à l'intervention américaine en Irak, allant même jusqu'à s'engager pour « venir en aide aux frères » contre « l'ennemi de Dieu ». Encouragés par l'opposition à la guerre manifestée dans les pays occidentaux et aux États-Unis mêmes, les Mauritaniens ont interprété la position française face à l'intervention américaine comme étant l'expression de liens renoués avec les peuples arabes. A Fragile Recovery of the Arabs' Heart
If Mauritania is considered as the « Occidental gateway » to the Arab World, for Mauritanians, Iraq is considered as the oriental one. Thus, it is hardly surprising that Mauritanians, unlike their government, actively opposed American intervention in Iraq, to such an extent that they committed themselves to « help their brothers » against « God's enemy ». Encouraged by anti-war demonstrations in the Western countries as well as in the United States, the Mauritanians interpreted France's position towards American intervention as the expression of renewed links with the Arab peoples.
