« Le camp des Saints » de Jean Raspail (1973). récit d'une migration catastrophique des foules du tiers monde vers l'Occident, a connu de nombreuses traductions et, en France, un accueil critique favorable. A ce titre, ce roman, unique ces quinze dernières années, constitue le lieu privilégié d'une analyse des fantasmes et /ou des idéologies qui s'attachent à la migration. L'étude de la réception critique et des structures narratives du récit montre ses relations avec un complexe idéologique néo-malthusien propre à l'intelligentsia française.
Plus précisément encore, l'homologie des significations du roman avec les conceptions du réseau culturel français qu'est la Nouvelle Droite (surtout le G.R.E.C.E.) est mise en évidence. Peur de l'étranger, souci du maintien d'une aristocratie 'indo-européenne' et défense de l'intégrité culturelle de l'Europe composent un ensemble d'éléments communs à cette dynamique intellectuelle et au récit de Raspail.
Au total, cet article révèle les options idéologiques qui fondent la prétendue prophétie du « Camp des Saints » et montre comment thèmes néo-malthusiens et conceptions de la Nouvelle Droite peuvent être déployés dans le champ littéraire, selon une imagerie de la migration dotée d'une négativité hyperbolique. « Le camp des Saints » by Jean Raspail (1973) is the story of a migration of Third Word crowds which is a disaster for the western world. The book has been translated into several languages and it received good reviews in France. Therefore, this novel, unique in its kind in the last fifteen years, provides the ideal frame for an analysis of the ideologies that are linked with migration. The study of the reviews and of the narrative structures of the story shows how it is connected with what can be described as a French neo-malthusian ideological complex.
More precisely, the homology of meanings in the novel with the concepts of the French cultural network embodied in the « Nouvelle Droite » — especially the G.R.E.C.E. — is brought into focus. Fears of alien migrants, concern for an Indo-European aristocracy and preservation of the cultural integrity of Europe shapes a series of items that are common to that intellectual trend and to the novel by J. Raspail.
As a result, this article discloses the ideological choices « Le camp des Saints » is based on, and shows how neo-malthusian Nouvelle Droite concepts can be developed in the literary field, according to an image of migration filled with hyperbolic negativity. Source : Éditeur (via Persée) |
