À partir d'archives locales et associatives de Nanterre, de l'observation des Oranges, association militant pour la mémoire de l'immigration, d'entretiens biographiques avec ses membres et de nombreux représentants de l'espace associatif et politique nanterrien, on se propose d'analyser les usages localisés d'Abdelmalek Sayad comme un révélateur des cadres d'intégration d'une mémoire immigrée et comme une étape singulière dans la reconnaissance par la municipalité de ses populations immigrées. La référence à Sayad, schème structurant les activités des Oranges et pas à pas les discours municipaux sur l'identité locale, se situe à l'intersection d'une pluralité de processus : côté municipal, ouverture d'un espace de légitimation des entreprises pro-immigrées par une municipalité en plein bouleversement et à la recherche de cadres adaptés pour investir la mémoire de l'immigration sans effacer la dimension ouvrière de la commune ; côté associatif, une propension particulière chez certains militants à l'autodidaxie culturelle, une confrontation avec le monde universitaire et une relative domination dans l'espace politique local. Dans ces conditions, la référence au sociologue de l'immigration s'y présente comme une ressource en forte adéquation avec les trajectoires et positions sociales des intéressés et comme une arme dans le jeu politique local. Son ambivalence fournit les clés de compréhension de sa progressive accession à l'espace public, la personnalisation et la canonisation qu'opèrent ces usages profanes accentuant in fine l'aspect politique de l'œuvre de Sayad. From Intellectual Ressource to Political “Cause”From local and associative archives of Nanterre (a North West popular suburb of Paris), following the observation of the Oranges, an association advocating for the memory of immigration, and with biographical interviews with its members and many representatives of associations and local political arena, the article analyzes the localized uses of Abdelmalek Sayad as a reveal of the including frameworks of immigrants memory and as an original step in the recognition of its immigrant population by the city. Sayad's quotations are structuring the Oranges activities and, step by step, the public speeches on local identity. This scheme belongs to a plural process : on the municipal side, it refers to the opening of a field of legitimation for the pro-immigrants actions in a period of political dislocation for a municipality which is expecting suitable frameworks able to recognize the memory of immigration without erasing the working-class dimension of the city ; on the association's side, the Sayad reference is linked to a special inclination to cultural self-study of some activists, to the dialogue of some of them with academic knowledge and the relative dominated position they are facing to in the local political arena. In these circumstances, the reference to Sayad, the sociologist of immigration, appears as a resource suited to social positions and trajectories of these activists and as a weapon in local politics. The several meanings of that reference can explain its progressive rise to public arena and the personalized and the canonized non-professionnal uses of Sayad which increase, at least, the political side of its work.
