Cet article s'intéresse aux processus d'appropriation et de catégorisation de l'espace en situation de domination à travers le cas des migrants népalais en Inde. L'étude des rapports à l'espace des migrants est l'entrée privilégiée ici pour comprendre comment les Népalais, travailleurs temporaires au bas de l'échelle socio-économique, font passer l'espace indien de l'étrangeté à la familiarité. L'un des enjeux pour eux est en effet d'arriver à forger des niches, dans l'espace public et privé, où ils se sentent à l'aise et presque « chez eux » malgré l'exclusion sociale et spatiale qu'ils vivent au quotidien. En fonction de leurs ambitions et des possibilités qui s'offrent à eux, ils s'approprient l'espace indien de manière différentielle, en lui attribuant des valeurs qui dépendent largement de ce que la migration leur permet de réaliser. This article focuses on how space is appropriated and categorised in a context of domination through the case of Nepalese migrants in India. The study of the migrants' relationship to space is selected as the preferred approach to understanding how the Nepalese, temporary workers with the lowest socio-economic status, transform foreign space into a familiar one. One of the major challenges for them is to build niches in the public and private space, where they feel at ease and almost “at home”, despite the social and spatial exclusion they suffer daily. Depending on their personal ambitions and on the opportunities available to them, they appropriate the Indian space in a differential way, by attributing to it values that depend largely on what migration enables them to achieve.
