L'article porte sur le quartier de la Chapelle, situé entre les 10e et 18e arrondissements de Paris, dans lequel un nombre croissant de commerces et d'associations tamoules se sont installés depuis une vingtaine d'années. Il détaille les différentes formes du processus d'appropriation de l'espace collectif du quartier engendré par cette présence tamoule, et la façon dont elles ont abouti à l'appropriation symbolique du quartier, désormais souvent désigné comme le « Little Jaffna » parisien. Il examine également les réactions des habitants face à cette appropriation symbolique, considérée par certains comme dévalorisante, en les rapportant aux perceptions de l'ordre social local et aux projections sociales et affectives sur le quartier. The article deals with the La Chapelle area, located between the 10th and 18th districts of Paris, where an increasing number of Tamil shops and associations have grown up over the past twenty or so years. It analyses the diverse forms taken by the appropriation process of the area's collective space engendered by this Tamil presence and how they have led to the symbolic appropriation of La Chapelle, now called the Parisian “Little Jaffna”. It also looks into the reactions of the inhabitants in the face of this symbolic appropriation, regarded disparagingly by some, in relation to perceptions of the local social order and to the social and emotional projections on the area.
