Une cartographie des élections et des violences postélectorales qui se sont déroulées au Kenya au début 2008 permet de nuancer certains a priori d'une analyse mêlant ethnicité et violence. L'ethnicisation du vote n'apparaît pas si franche, tandis que la localisation des violences dans le pays répond souvent plus à des problèmes fonciers qu'à des antagonismes directement ethniques. From fraud to violence. Cartography of a political regression A cartography of the elections held in Kenya in early 2008, and of the violence that followed these elections, allows us to counter, via a nuanced gaze, certain a priori analyses, which tend to associate violence with notions of ethnicity. Links between ethnic identity and the nature of votes cast, such a cartography suggests, were not as clear as some have suggested ; in rural zones, more clear-cut links appear to tie violence in Kenya to land-use issues than to antagonisms of an « ethnic » nature. In urban areas, on the other hand, there does seem to have been significant congruence between conceptions of ethnic identity and incidences of crime and its attendant violence.
