	Résumé	Constatant les échecs fréquents des politiques de reboisement collectif au Burkina Faso et au Bénin, l'article cherche à comprendre pourquoi les populations locales manifestent peu d'intérêt pour la protection et l'entretien de ces plantations. Une perspective anthropologique – l'enchevêtrement des représentations et des pratiques liées aux traditions locales – et historique – l'héritage colonial – basée sur des enquêtes ethnobotaniques permet de mieux cerner ces insuccès et le comportement des villageois. Nous montrons que les droits d'usage et de propriété, en se superposant, rendent les plantations collectives difficiles, d'autant plus que cette pratique agroforestière est relativement récente. 	Résumé anglais	The limits of reforestation in Burkina Faso and Benin : from forced labor to participatory approaches Given the frequent failures of policies for collective reforestation in Burkina Faso and Benin, this article seeks to understand why local populations show little interest for the protection and maintenance of these plantations. The author's analysis derives from ethno-botanical studies based on an anthropological perspective that attends to the overlap between representations and practices of local traditions, and a historical perspective that accounts for the colonial heritage. Arguing that this approach allows one to better understand these failures, as well as local behavior, the author shows that use and property rights are superimposed and thus hinder the establishment of collective plantations, which is in any case a fairly recent practice in agro-forestry.
