Par son envergure et son intensité, la guerre de 1899-1902 est pour l'Afrique du Sud le conflit qui se rapproche le plus de la guerre totale du xxe siècle. Ce conflit joue un rôle central dans la conscience historique afrikaner et nourrit le développement d'un nationalisme afrikaner pendant la première moitié de ce siècle. Avec les récents changements en Afrique du Sud, la signification culturelle et la référence à la guerre suscitèrent encore plus de divisions qu'auparavant. The political instrumentalization of the commemoration of the 110 year anniversary of the South African war of 1899-1902Due to its scale and intensity, the war of 1899-1902 is, for South African society, a conflict that is closest to 20th century « total » war. This conflict has a central place in the Afrikaner historical consciousness, having nourished the development of Afrikaner nationalism during the first half of the century. With recent changes in South Africa, the cultural signification of the war and the very reference to the war have inspired deep divisions, once again. Several groups have tried to transform the symbolic content and significance of the war according to their respective priorities.
