Le 19 septembre 2002, une nouvelle tentative de coup d'État a plongé la Côte d'Ivoire dans une situation de guerre ouverte. Qui sont ces rebelles qui ont pris le contrôle de la moitié nord du pays ? La radicalisation ultranationaliste du régime Gbagbo peut-elle faire basculer le pays vers la guerre civile et l'« épuration ethnique » ? Que peuvent faire la France et les pays de la région ? après avoir rappelé combien l'ivoirité, la transition militaire de l'année 2000 et l'impunité avaient miné l'édifice national, l'article souligne le potentiel de violence de la crise actuelle et insiste sur les risques d'internationalisation d'un conflit qui pourrait embraser toute la sous-région. The Ivory Coast on the Verge of Implosion On the 19 th of September 2002, another attempted coup d'état plunged the Ivory Coast into a situation of open warfare. Who are the rebels that took control of the northern part of the country ? Who supports them ? Will the ultra-nationalist radicalization of the Gbagbo regime push the country towards civil war and « ethnic cleansing » ? What can the French, trapped in a no-win situation, and the countries of the region do to end the military impasse ? These questions are addressed in this article, which underscores the potential for violence and the historical dimensions of this crisis that might engulf the entire sub-region.
