En dépit de ses succès, le modèle démocratique sud-africain traverse une phase délicate. La succession de Mandela annonce une possible crispation du pouvoir, en raison notamment des tendances autoritaires de Thabo Mbeki. Incapable de s'affirmer sur la scène continentale comme une puissance modératrice, la RSA pourrait devenir un État « tricheur » (trickster) comme un autre, profitant des interstices criminels de la mondialisation. South Africa on the eve of a decisive election In spite of its accomplishments, South African democracy is now entering into a fragile phase. The succession of Mandela might trigger political tension due, for the most part, to the authoritarian tendancies of Mandela's hier apparent, Thabo Mbecki. Incapable of asserting itself on the continent as a moderating power, bearing a new “Westphalian” order, the SAR might become a trickster state, joining others on the continent, profiting from the insterstices of criminality triggered by “globalization” and regional logics of war and peace.
