Throughout its history, Australia has always managed to maintain a “special relationship” with the dominating power. Historically tied and culturally attached to Great Britain and the United States, it has observed an exemplary behavior regarding its alliance with Washington by the contribution to numerous military conflicts. Nevertheless, the economic and political development of Asian countries will entail a major shift of power which Canberra would have to accommodate. It is actually a question of Australia having to seize a historic opportunity – namely the Asian century – in which Australia could emancipate itself from the supervision of a great power and eventually assert itself as an influential actor in the world of tomorrow.
