Benjamin Constant fixe la tradition libérale en la construisant contre Robespierre dont la politique niveleuse porterait atteinte aux droits de l'individu propriétaire. Le discours de Robespierre sur la liberté serait donc un leurre : il raisonnerait en Romain et confondrait la liberté des Anciens, où l'individu et sa propriété sont soumis à la collectivité, avec celle des Modernes grâce à laquelle l'individu propriétaire peut s'épanouir. Des récits concurrents, en particulier dans la tradition marxiste, soulignent au contraire la dimension essentiellement opportuniste du socialisme de Robespierre. Il devrait d'abord être considéré comme un partisan du libéralisme économique, un défenseur de la propriété et de la révolution bourgeoise. Face à ces interprétations dominantes dans lesquelles la liberté et l'égalité s'opposent, d'autres lectures mettent en avant le libéralisme égalitaire de Robespierre. Benjamin Constant established the liberal tradition by constructing it in opposition to Robespierre whose fiercely egalitarian politics constituted a violation of the rights of individual property. The discourse of Robespierre on liberty, therefore, is misleading: it constitutes a specious reasoning, confusing the liberty of the Ancients where the individual and his property are subordinate to the collectivity, with that of the Moderns where the individual property owner can flourish. Simultaneous interprétations, particularly in the Marxist tradition, underscore the essentially opportunistic dimension of the socialism of Robespierre. He should first be considered as a partisan of liberal economics, a defender of property and the bourgeois révolution.
