Cet article présente dans un premier temps les analyses du mouvement Tea Party. Loin d'être un phénomène marginal aux mains de riches hommes d'affaires, le Tea Party est un mouvement social, au sens fort, profondément enraciné dans des espaces conservateurs. C'est l'écart entre l'importance du mouvement et ses maigres résultats qui constituent la seconde partie de cette contribution. Une comparaison avec des mouvements similaires apparus dans les années 1970 permet de mieux comprendre l'incapacité du Tea Party à élargir son audience au-delà des cercles militants traditionnels. Is the Tea Party movement an illusion? First and foremost, this article describes the way social scientists have analyzed Tea Partiers. Far from being a marginal and Astroturf phenomenon into the hands of billionaires, the Tea Party is a social movement, strongly rooted in conservative suburbs that emerged after World War Two. The gap between the social impulse and its benign impact during the 2012 presidential campaign is analyzed in the second part. Finally, a comparison to similar social protests in the 1970s sheds new light on the difficulty of Tea Partiers to enlarge its constituency beyond traditional circles of militants.
