À partir d'une enquête ethnographique conduite au Cerro Alegre à Valparaiso (Chili), l'auteur met en évidence, en creux de l'inscription récente de ce quartier au patrimoine mondial pour son histoire illustre au XIXe siècle, la présence et l'empreinte, au cœur du lien social, d'une mémoire souterraine de la dictature du général Pinochet entre 1973 et 1990. L'article montre alors comment la mise en patrimoine devient un déclencheur et exacerbe les conflits liés au passé dictatorial qui, du sous-sol social où ils étaient réduits, ressurgissent et se rejouent, au sein du conseil des voisins du quartier. “Making the Neighbourhood, Making History.” World Heritage Registration and the Dictatorial Past in Valparaiso. Proceeding from an ethnographical study of Cerro Alegre in Valparaiso (Chile), and in the light of the recent registration of this neighbourhood as a World Heritage Site in virtue of its illustrious xixth century, the author examines the presence and imprint at the heart of social relations of an underground memory of the Pinochet dictatorship from 1973 to 1990. The paper highlights how becoming a World Heritage Site can trigger and exacerbate conflicts linked to the dictatorship period and which, re-emerging from the social underground to which they had been confined, are played out again on the neighbourhood council.
