Chez Dickinson, l'inconstance s'inscrit dans une plus large réflexion sur la double orientation de la possibilité. Nombreux sont les tropes et structures qui ont à voir avec un mouvement de remplacement ou de retournement. Cet article vise à cerner ce que Dickinson entend lorsqu'elle nomme une telle possibilité “ the Instead ” (le “ au-lieu-de ”, le remplacement). Si l'on revient à la scène originelle de la “ conversion ” impossible, on mesure combien celle-ci détermine les structures de non choix ou d'exclusion; mais aussi comment le poète les convertit ironiquement en choix actifs. L'étude des stratégies poétiques permet de dégager un dispositif du variable — à la fois éloge de l'infinie possibilité du poétique et protestation politique contre tout schéma. Mutability in Dickinson's poetry is one element in a broader meditation on doubleedged possibility. Many of her poetic structures and tropes operate around a movement of violent replacement —of one instance, idea or choice by another. In this article, I propose to determine what Dickinson means by calling such possibility “ the Instead. ” Vision and election are denied her (or denied by her), in a fundamental scene that becomes the well-spring of the “ non-choice ” that disseminates its tropes and structures throughout her work. But Dickinson ironically converts not-being-chosen into choosing —instead. Studying her poetic strategy reveals a c omplex scheme of variability —in praise of the infinite possibility of poetry and in political protest against all prescribed patterns.
