Cet article entend montrer comment la vie et l'œuvre de Bob Dylan sont caractéristiques des États-Unis des années soixante, de la jeunesse d'alors, de sa contre-culture et du « movement ». Il cherche aussi à montrer comment Dylan et son œuvre se sont construits : Dylan est issu d'un lieu (Hibbing, dans le Minnesota), typique de l'Amérique des petites villes et de la middle class américaine, juste après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il est aussi l'héritier de la tradition folklorique américaine, prospère lors du New Deal, par exemple grâce à Woody Guthrie. Par ailleurs, Dylan, influencé par les beatniks américains, a ironiquement porté un regard iconoclaste sur les États-Unis et le monde. The objective of this article is to try to show how Bob Dylan's life and work were both utterly typical of the US 1960s era of youth culture, counter culture, and “the movement”—and, at the same time, how the man's life and work has been sui generis. First, Dylan is an expression of a place—Hibbing, Minnesota, small town America & middle-class life; then a time, post WWII America; plus a heritage: the American folk music tradition which flourished in the New Deal Years, specially in the life and work of Woody Guthrie. Second, Dylan included his own ironic style, the influence of the US beatniks, and a combination of reverence for authenticity in any form plus an iconoclastic eye for what's true in the USA and anywhere else in the world. This article tries to show why people listen when he sings; how his songs are based in the US 60s and American Civilization, how they help us understand and relate to that time—yet beautifully keep extending beyond it.
