The inter-war years, like the aftermath of World War Two, saw the appearance and development of a number of movements promoting widely diverse projects for a united Europe. Can the generational approach, used successfully and for a long time in the field of the history of ideas (including literary history and intellectual history), prove to be relevant for our understanding of the evolution of the history of pro-European activism? Can we not identify characteristics common to each generation of activists, each one with a new way of feeling and understanding European unity which is different from the previous generation?
