« Le problème des statistiques allemandes du commerce extérieur avant 1871 » Les statistiques officielles du commerce extérieur de l'Allemagne commencent en 1834 avec la formation d'une entité commerciale allemande unifiée, le Zollverein. Mais jusqu'en 1871, ces statistiques présentent un défaut majeur : elles sont exprimées en quantité et ne donnent aucune indication sur la valeur du commerce. Ce défaut, qui fait obstacle à toute étude statistique du commerce allemand sur le long terme, n'a jamais été expliqué. En revenant sur l'histoire de l'élaboration des statistiques commerciales en Allemagne, en France et en Grande-Bretagne, et sur l'histoire politique allemande jusqu'à la création de l'Empire, cet article met en évidence l'existence d'un lien entre la production de statistiques commerciales et le degré d'intégration politique. “The problem of German Trade Statistics before 1871”
German official trade statistics begin in 1834 with the formation of a unified commercial entity, the Zollverein. But until 1871, these data suffer from a major flaw: they are just quantities and give no indication of the value of trade. This flaw, that hinders any statistical analysis of German trade over the long term, has never been explained. By looking at the history of trade statistics construction in Germany, France and Great Britain and at German political history until the creation of the Empire, this article brings to light the relationship between the production of trade statistics and the degree of political integration.
