En mai 2009, la municipalité de Nanterre et l'établissement public d'aménagement Seine Arche ont lancé un projet expérimental participatif d'accession sociale qualifié de « coopérative ». Cette opération complexe interroge : comment une opération d'accession à la propriété privée peut-elle susciter une dynamique collective ? Chercheurs et politiques craignent souvent que les opérations d'accession enferment leurs habitants dans un projet de vie individualiste. L'étude révèle l'émergence conjointe de deux dynamiques : la constitution d'un sentiment inédit d'appropriation de soi des habitants (Castel, 2001) et la construction progressive d'un collectif. La dynamique collective est le prolongement et la garantie du projet individuel d'accès à la propriété privée. Private Property, Self-Awareness and Collective Identity: the Example of the Cooperative Housing Association Le Grand Portail in Nanterre, FranceIn May, 2009 the city of Nanterre and the urban planning establishment Seine Arche launched an experimental project of participation and labeled it “cooperative.” It is aimed at increasing home ownership. This complex operation raises a fundamental question : how can a project aimed at increasing access to private property ownership evoke a group dynamic ? Researchers and politicians are often afraid that operations whose goal is the acquisition of property necessarily locks people into living totally as individualists. The research, however, reveals the emergence of two dynamics : the creation of new of feelings within the inhabitants of self-awareness (Castel, 2001) and the progressive creation of a collective identity. The group dynamic is the extension and guarantee of the individual's plan to acquire private property.
