Dans cet entretien, l'historien Jean-Pierre Chrétien évoque sa découverte du Burundi en 1964, comme enseignant aux élèves instituteurs de Bujumbura. Il rapporte sa découverte du clivage entre Hutu et Tutsi, le choc des massacres de 1972 et l'influence du modèle rwandais sur le Burundi. Il revient sur les origines de « l'idéologie hamitique », ce mythe racial issu des sciences sociales du 19e siècle diffusé par la colonisation. Au début des années 1990, Jean-Pierre Chrétien découvre la radicalisation en cours de la pensée ethnique au Rwanda et tentera au début de l'année 1993 d'alerter l'opinion française sur les risques de génocide. A Historian Reads the Tutsi Genocide: An Interview with Jean-Pierre Chrétien.
In this interview, the historian Jean-Pierre Chretien recalls his experience in Burundi in 1964, when he instructed student teachers from Bujumbura. He recounts his discovery of the rift between the Hutu and the Tutsi, the shock produced by the 1972 massacres and Rwanda's influence on Burundi. He revisits the roots of “Hamitic ideology” a racial mythology that surfaced in the social sciences during the 19th century and which was subsequently spread by colonialism. At the beginning of the 1990s, Jean-Pierre Chretien became aware of the increasing radicalization of racial thinking in Rwanda.
