L'article présente une expérience « grandeur nature », à savoir le regroupement d'éleveurs marocains en coopératives ethnolignagères, et ce dans le cadre d'un grand Projet de développement des parcours et de l'élevage de l'Oriental (PDPEO). L'auteur montre comment le référent tribal et les solidarités ethniques qui lui donnent corps et le justifient ont été mobilisés au cours de l'histoire par les tribus pour faire face aux différents pouvoirs qui se sont succédé (le makhzen traditionnel, le Protectorat français, l'État marocain actuel). Ces coopératives avaient en charge la gestion des parcours pastoraux et des problèmes techniques et économiques qui sont liés au cheptel. Elles se sont tantôt scindées, tantôt regroupées dans des coopératives, attestant que le contenu du référent tribal relève en fait d'agencements périodiques : c'est un « construit variable » qui s'inscrit dans le contexte historique. An experiment in real conditions is presented of grouping Moroccan herders in ethnolineage cooperatives as part of a major project (PDPEO) for developing pastoral itineraries and livestock in Oriental Province. Ethnic solidarities and references to tribes, which constitute and justify this project, have served tribes in their dealings with different, successive powers during history: the traditional makhzen, the French Protectorate and the contemporary Moroccan state. These cooperatives were assigned the task of managing pastoral itineraries and handling the technical and economic problems related to livestock. They split up, reformed, or regrouped, this being evidence that the reference to tribes has to do with periodically reworked arrangements.
