L'exceptionnalisme américain s'explique avant tout par le développement social et économique d'un pays qui n'a pas eu besoin d'État pour faciliter la mobilité sociale, et a bâti des institutions libres. En politique étrangère, les principes qui fondent ces institutions ont depuis toujours nourri un sentiment d'exception. The American exceptionalism and the foreign policy of the United States The American exceptionalism originates in the social and economic development of a country where the state was not the prime agent of social mobility and where free institutions were built at the onset. The principles underlying US institutions have always generated a sense of exception, which pervades in today's controversial foreign policy under George W. Bush.
