À São Paulo, l'industrie de la confection a conforté sa présence dans les quartiers centraux tandis qu'un lent, mais inexorable mouvement de désindustrialisation, initié dans les années 1970, touchait ces mêmes quartiers. Nous proposons ici d'étudier pourquoi et comment la confection conserve son ancrage dans les quartiers du centre de São Paulo.Après avoir rappelé les caractères principaux de la confection à São Paulo et au Brésil, nous explorons les avantages que l'installation en ville procure au secteur de la confection. Nous observons ensuite que l'organisation du secteur repose sur plusieurs structures productives (usines, ateliers, travail à domicile) qui se répartissent dans l'espace métropolitain de façon différenciée. Nous montrons enfin que le centre-ville concentre des ressources qui sont essentielles pour la confection et que l'atelier est particulièrement bien adapté à l'environnement urbain spécifique du centre-ville, dont il tire profit. Location and organisation of the garment industry in São Paulo, Brazil In São Paulo, the garment industry has strengthened its presence in central neighbourhoods while a slow but inexorable movement of deindustrialisation started in the 1970s affected those areas. We propose here to examine why and how the garment industry has been able to remain in the central districts of São Paulo. After recalling the main characteristics of the garment production in São Paulo and Brazil, we explore the benefits that urban settlements draw from the presence of the garment industry. We then see how production in the sector relies on structures (factories, workshops, homework) distributed in the metropolitan area in a differentiated way. Finally, we show how the city centre offers resources essential for the industry, and how workshops are particularly suited for this specific urban setting, of which they can take advantage.
