Résumé anglais Globalization rhetoric and realities There is lot of talk today about globalization of the economy and the effects this is supposed to have on public policies and on social stratification in advanced and less advanced industriali zed countries The present article takes closer look at the pro blem in the OECD countries and suggests that whatever defini tion of globalization one uses there is no convincing proof that the rise in international exchanges is responsible for de-indus trialization for the growing gap in income distribution or for the contraction of social policies in advanced societies But if globalization is not the culprit what is The answer lies with the sustained transformation in the American economy throughout the 1980s and the political reforms which deregula ted commercial activity and began the dismantling of the wel fare-State This transformation came in response to the crisis in American capitalism the 1970s which was reflected in wave of company mergers and closures massive social projects and by decision-makers growing preoccupation with short-term profita bility To describe this transformation the author has introduced
