On s'intéresse ici au travail symbolique réalisé par deux associations familiales catholiques, l'une française et l'autre portugaise, afin de contrevenir aux représentations négatives associées aux catholiques traditionalistes (passéisme, frustration, hypocrisie moralisatrice, etc.). Pour éviter que ces représentations ne viennent entraver leur capacité de recrutement et la bonne réception de leurs revendications, ces associations développent des stratégies qui se déploient à plusieurs niveaux : elles sont notamment mises en œuvre lorsqu'il s'agit de choisir les responsables, les formes d'énonciation des revendications ou les modes d'action privilégiés. Ces stratégies constituent un point d'entrée particulièrement intéressant pour penser les formes du militantisme et l'organisation du travail dans ces collectifs. Source : Éditeur (via Cairn.info) |

Dorky, Hypocritical, and Frustrated? Activism in Catholic Families' Associations Confronted to CriticismIn this paper, I discuss the findings of a research project focusing on two Catholic families' associations, in both France and Portugal. I analyze the symbolic strategies developed by these organizations to challenge the common negative representations of conservative Catholics (reluctance to embrace modernity, hypocrisy, frustration, etc.). These negative representations can represent an obstacle for their claims to be heard, and can also hamper the recruitment of new members. The associations under study try to avoid these problems by developing a set of strategies, including the selection of their representatives, the way they formulate their demands or their chosen modes of operation. I argue that the analysis of these strategies is very helpful to understand forms of activism and the organisation of work within the associations. Source : Éditeur (via Cairn.info) |
