Comment faire sens du refus d'entretien d'un enquêté incontournable ? Lors d'une recherche sur les cinéastes militants des années 1970, nous n'avons pu rencontrer le documentariste Chris Marker qui a détaillé dans un courriel les raisons de son refus. Décédé en 2012, son refus nous a semblé, a posteriori, riche de sens et nous l'avons interprété en formulant deux hypothèses solidaires. La première, c'est le refus du stigmate. Quoique pionnier et acteur crucial du cinéma militant, Chris Marker a refusé d'être associé au dogmatisme qui le caractérisait et a toujours fait primer l'autonomie artistique. La deuxième, c'est son obsession du secret et de l'enchantement. Le collectif de cinéma militant qu'il a fondé et animé lui conférait une certaine invisibilité tout en procédant d'un principe d'organisation fortement charismatique. How should we interpret an essential interviewee's refusal to grant an interview? While researching activist filmmakers of the 1970s, I was unable to meet with the documentary filmmaker Chris Marker, who explained the reasons for his refusal in an e-mail. Following his death in 2012, his refusal seemed rife with meaning that I have interpreted and used to formulate two complementary hypotheses. The first is the refusal of stigma. Although he was a pioneer and key player in activist cinema, Chris Marker refused to be associated with the dogmatism that characterized this genre and always emphasized artistic autonomy. The second hypothesis is his obsession with secrets and enchantment. The activist film collective that he founded and ran gave him a degree of invisibility while nonetheless being the product of an extremely charismatic organizational principle.
