Dans ce chapitre, R.D. compare les juges à des écrivains, qui devraient collaborer à la rédaction d'un roman collectif en écrivant l'un après l'autre un chapitre. De même que chacun devrait tenir compte des chapitres précédents et s'efforcer en même temps de rendre l'œuvre dans son ensemble la plus belle possible, de même, les juges interprètent l'ensemble des règles et des institutions en les faisant apparaître sous leur meilleur jour et ces interprétations mettent en lumière les principes nécessaires à leurs décisions. In this chapter, Professor Dworkin compares judges to writers who are collaborating on the production of a collective work. Each of them, one after the other, contributes a chapter to the growing whole. At each stage the author has to take account of preceding chapters, doing his best to add to the work so that its best qualities are brought out.
