Résumé anglais Notwithstanding being one of the top-selling books on the 1968 student movement in Mexico and the massacre in the Tlatelolco Square, there are still no known specific analysis of the photos included in Elena Poniatowska's La noche de Tlatelolco. This article analyzes the images incorporated in this author's book. The present text proposes to employ principles of photographic history in order to approach the images as a photo essay and poses important questions with regard to our interpretation of this section of Poniatowska's publication : both as an independent unit and as a composed set of “ text and image ”. This study concludes by considering the changes that have occurred within this photographic essay with its translation into English and asks how these modifications can affect the way in which the text is read and the projection it gives of itself.
