Masliah, prolific polygraph (lyricist, short-story writer, novelist, playwright…) has often been labeled a humorist, heir to a tradition which ranges from Lewis Carroll to Woody Allen, not to mention Alfred Jarry, Ionesco, the Marx Brothers, the Oulipo, etc. In his books, the central character is language, which he plays with and subverts constantly. But there is also another element he systematically subverts : the pair forgetfulness/memory. Both Masliah's characters and the narrative or poetical voices are often subjected disturbances and alterations in memory. Besides producing humor and generating mechanisms of textual production, Masliah's elaboration on forgetfulness and memory points to the complex relationship between Uruguayans and the recent memories on the military dictatorship.
