Résumé anglais Up to the 1990s, Jorge Amado was the most famous and influential Brazilian writer in Germany, while in the present his situation has changed considerably. In view of Brazil's condition as « Guest of honour » at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2013, this seems to be a good moment for a critical revision of the main characteristics of his reception in Germany from its beginngs in the 1950s to the present. Some of the central questions are: What is the inner logic of the synthesis of the young political writer and the elder « storyteller » ? Or have there been, instead, two different « Jorge Amados » in the German reception? Finally, what is the relationship, in Amado's German reception, between exotic and engaged writing, regional and universal dimensions – all aspects that are not always clearly separated in his work ?
