Résumé anglais Although the word « harem » evokes the very essence of women's lives in Islamic societies, the harem as an institution has only recently been considered as an object for historic investigation. Most studies of the sultanic harem excluded any consideration of social or political history : their approach looked at the reciprocal representations of the Orient and the West, or they were based on an indigenous, but nonetheless mythical and idealized vision of the harem as a matrix and an eternal institution.
