À partir de l'examen statistique d'un corpus des reportages sur l'obésité diffusés dans les éditions des journaux de 20 heures de TF1 et France 2 entre 1998 et 2009 et d'une dizaine d'entretiens réalisés avec les journalistes en charge de cette actualité, cet article part du constat que la contribution des personnes obèses à l'information qui les concerne s'amoindrie considérablement au moment même où la médiatisation de cette question de santé publique bat son plein. L'analyse explique ce paradoxe en abordant successivement la politisation de l'obésité, les transformations intervenues dans la division du travail journalistique puis la multiplication des risques de stigmatisation des populations concernées. Ce faisant, elle montre comment le traitement de l'obésité dans l'information télévisée fait exception à la dynamique d'individualisation de la responsabilité des problèmes sociaux ainsi qu'à la montée en puissance des malades dans la sphère publiques. This article is based on the statistical analysis of a corpus of documentaries dealing with obesity broadcasted during the primetime news programs of the channels TF1 and France 2 between 1998 and 2009, and on ten or so interviews with journalists covering this issue. It starts with the observation that the contribution of obese people to the information about their condition diminishes significantly as obesity is increasingly presented as a public health issue. It explains this paradox by addressing successively the politicization of obesity, the evolution of the division of journalistic labor, and the multiplication of the risks of stigmatizing the populations concerned. It shows that the treatment of obesity as a news topic is an exception to two general trends: the tendency to individualize the responsibility for social problems, and the empowerment of people suffering from various health conditions in the public sphere.
