Les visites présidentielles en province représentent un événement considérable pour les populations visitées durant au moins les deux premiers tiers du xxe siècle. Elles sont en effet l'occasion d'un bouleversement complet des repères sensoriels ordinaires des villes accueillant le chef de l'Etat. Pourtant, leur caractère événementiel est constamment mis en danger. D'une part, l'effervescence qu'elles donnent à voir nécessite un long travail préparatoire fondé sur la mobilisation d'institutions de proximité ayant fait localement leurs preuves. Dès lors, ce travail porte en lui les germes d'une banalisation de l'événement. D'autre part, la visite doit également faire face à un processus de routinisation lié à son intégration dans le voyage. “Our flowers and hearts”: Presidential visits in the provinces as instituted eventsPresidential visits to provinces in France were major events for the local population during the first sixty years of the 20th century. They provided an occasion for completely changing the ordinary aspect of the towns visited by the head of state. However there was a constant risk lest the tour not turn into an event. For one thing, the excitement surrounding a visit necessitated long preparations involving proven local institutions; and this work gave rise to the possibility that the occasion would become something very ordinary.
