	Résumé	Cette contribution vise à restituer la cohérence du parcours d'un grand intellectuel méditerranéen, grec et français, Cornelius Castoriadis (1922-1997). Jeune résistant grec révolutionnaire menacé de mort par les staliniens, il arrive en France à l'âge de 23 ans, alors que l'engouement pour l'URSS est à son zénith. Il contribue alors à créer, avec Claude Lefort l'une des branches les plus vivaces de la gauche radicale, « Socialisme ou Barbarie », qui deviendra ensuite une revue mythique, notamment par sa critique de gauche des régimes dits « communistes ». Économiste, philosophe, psychanalyste, militant politique, Castoriadis est l'auteur d'une œuvre essentielle pour quiconque s'intéresse à la question de l'institution hors du cadre de l'État, notamment avec ce qu'on peut considérer comme l'un des maîtres ouvrages du XXe siècle, L'Institution imaginaire de la société (1975). Il n'a en effet cessé, en croisant l'analyse historienne et l'approche psychanalytique, de s'attacher à penser la conquête de l'autonomie comme condition de l'approfondissement démocratique. 	Résumé anglais	This paper aims to restore the consistency of the course of a significant intellectual in the Mediterranean, Greek and French, Cornelius Castoriadis (1922-1997). He arrived in France at the age of 23, as a young Greek revolutionary resistant, threatened with death by the Stalinists, while the enthusiasm for the USSR was at its zenith. Thus, he contributes to create, along with Claude Lefort, one of the most vivacious branches of the Radical Left, “Socialism or Barbarism”, which later became a legendary periodical, mainly for his leftist criticism of the so-called ‘communist' regimes. Economist, philosopher, psychoanalyst and political activist, Castoriadis is the author of an essential work for anyone interested in the question of the institution outside the framework of the State, especially with what can be considered as a leading work of the twentieth century, The Imaginary Institution of Society (1975). He has indeed stopped, by crossing historical analysis and psychoanalytic approach, to focus on thinking the conquest of autonomy as a condition for democratic deepening.
