Résumé anglais Primaries first appeared in the early 20th century and became gradually accepted. It was only in the 1970s that most of the states entrusted their citizens with the designation of electoral candidates, including for the presidential election. However, political parties still try to maintain an important control over their choice. Confronted with attempts by the states to increase the number of voters, the courts have usually protected the right of association of political parties. A new type of primaries that has emerged recently may, however, change the situation.
