Résumé anglais Among European countries, Poland comes fifth for its forest resources (1,6 billion m3 of stand) as well as of timber harvests (22-23 million m3 of removals per year). The coniferous, especially pine, are now dominant, but the primitive forest was composed primarily of broad-leaved trees. As a result of the confiscation of large and medium-sized forest properties by the communist regime, no more than 17% of the forest area belongs to the private sector. Private forests grow mainly on the small plots on the marginal parts of peasant holdings For the lobby of state foresters the restitution of confis cated properties is now out of question In the past state-owned forests, together with the wood industry, were managed by the Ministry of Forests Today the wood industry has been separated from the State Forest Administration and taken over by private often even foreign capital. And the State Forest Administration increasingly employs private service enterprises. The New Forest Policy, initiated after the failure of the communist regime, recommended balanced and sustainable development of forest economy, while stressing its social and ecological functions.
