L'évolution rapide du vieillissement démographique des pays industrialisés conduit experts et medias à s'interroger sur la place et le rôle à venir des personnes âgées dans notre société. À l'aide d'un questionnaire, la présente étude visait à saisir la réponse que donnent les individus jeunes ou d'âge moyen à cette question. Cinq orientations furent proposées : Valorisation, Intégration, Assimilation, Ségrégation et Exclusion des personnes âgées. Les résultats montrèrent une préférence pour l'Intégration, puis la Valorisation et la Ségrégation, ainsi que des niveaux d'adhésion significativement différents selon le sexe des participants, leur attitude, leur Orientation à la Dominance Sociale, ou le type de personne âgée considérée. Enfin, l'adhésion aux diverses orientations s'est révélée un bon prédicteur des choix effectués par les participants lors d'une tâche consistant à sélectionner les activités proposées aux membres d'une association de personnes âgées. The present and rapid ageing of population in the industrialized countries leads experts and the media to wonder about the social place and the social role to come for the elderly people. The aim of this research was to identify which were the preferences of young and middle-aged french adults on this question. A questionnaire was built in order to measure their adhesion to each of five orientations: Valorization, Integration, Assimilation, Segregation, and Exclusion of elderly people. The results indicated that Integration followed by Valorization and Segregation were the best preferred orientations. The gender of participants, their attitudes towards the elderly people, their Social Dominance Orientation, and the proposed prototype of elderly people were found to have significant effects on the adhesion level to most orientations. Moreover, the adhesion level to the different orientations appeared a good predictor of participants' choices of what might be the activities for a club of retired people.
