Résumé anglais The September 11 attacks triggered a crisis of representation in the arts. Six years after the event, DeLillo's Falling Man put forth a literary reading of the event, in a novel that opens and closes with the scene that immediately followed the planes' impact into the towers. However, in spite of its circular structure, the novel does not reflect the aporetic aesthetics so often associated with postmodernism. On the contrary, the novel's composition displays a sort of asymptotic progression that slowly unravels the complexity of the event. This article suggests a reading of this progressive path through the form of a spiral, showing that the text relies on an open and iterative circularity that enables the novel to free itself from a vicious cycle, while reducing the gap between the words and the event. Submitted to this perspective of a spiral structure, the reading of Falling Man slowly enables the reader to decipher meaning and therefore turns the novel into a sort of hermeneutic performance.
