L'article examine l'intérêt des anthropologues français de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle pour les travaux des hygiénistes concernant les rapports entre le milieu, l'hygiène et la circulation. Centré sur la question de la ventilation de l'air, l'article cherche à démontrer la façon dont la ventilation n'était que l'une des manifestations d'une préoccupation plus générale concernant la circulation des éléments. Les sensations – odeurs, bruits et sons, lumière et couleur – étant censées agir, par l'intermédiaire du milieu, sur les organes des sens. L'examen des différences physiologiques entre peuples européens et peuples non européens a conduit les anthropologues à prendre en compte la variabilité culturelle de la faculté d'adaptation des organes des sens. The senses and the circulation of elements in the 19th century This article looks into the interest shown by French anthropologists, in the second half of the 19th century, in the work of hygienists on relationships between the environment, hygiene and circulation. With a focus on the question of air, we attempt to show how ventilation was only one of the manifestations of a more general concern over the circulation of elements. Sensations – smells, noise and sounds, light and colour – were assumed to act, via the environment, upon the sensory organs. Investigations into the differences between European and non-European peoples led anthropologists to take an interest in cultural variations in the adaptability of the sensory organs.
